Conservation in Common

Conservation in Common is a cross-disciplinary series of events for professionals working in the built heritage sector. Run in partnership with; the Department for Communities Historic Environment Division (HED), the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA), the Institute of Archaeologists of Ireland (IAI), the Institute of Historic Building Conservation Northern Ireland Branch (IHBC NI) , the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) Ireland and Building Control NI (BCNI).

Following on from a hugely successful and sold out opening event ‘Planning for Historic Renewal’ which took place at Hillsborough Castle on 3 November 2021, there are four upcoming ‘Online lunchtime talks’ now open for registration.

The next date for your diary is ‘Informed Conservation: Understanding significance to manage change in the historic environment’ taking place on 9 December, 1pm- 2.30pm. This talk will provide an overview on the subject of Informed Conservation, a holistic, values-based approach to conservation, based on understanding the asset and its setting, and reflected in the recent draft NI Conservation Principles.

Following this the next event ‘Archaeology: adding value to development and construction’ an online CPD workshop which will focus on the social, environmental and economic gains to be achieved when archaeology is integrated within construction projects, will take place on 15 February 2022.

On 10 March 2022 join us for ‘Saving the 21st Century’ when we will explore the social, economic, environmental and cultural value of 20th century buildings and discuss some of the typical technical challenges of conserving these relatively modern buildings.

Finally ‘Sustainability and the SPAB Approach’ online talk will take place on 7 April 2022 and will look at the SPAB Approach in detail, examining why we should value our historic buildings for both their beauty and their sustainability, the role that building maintenance has to play in protecting our built heritage, and some ways that greater energy efficiency in old buildings can be achieved.

A closing event for Conservation in Common ‘Underground, Overground, What’s There to See’ will take place on Friday 22 May 2022.
