Join HERoNI as they mark European Heritage Open Day with Colin Dunlop detailing the Maritime Ship and Aircraft Wrecks of Northern Ireland.
Since Prehistoric times we have relied on the sea for the transport of goods and people around our coast and for vital trade with our neighbours. However, fickle weather, dangerous currents and our rocky shoreline have resulted in many vessels being lost.
360 wrecks are currently known to lie within our waters but it is likely that there are thousands more waiting to be discovered. Our identified wrecks date from the 16th century to the present day and include sailing ships, steamships, motorboats, submarines and aircraft.
This talk will give an account of our maritime heritage, highlight some of our most famous wreck sites and give an overview of where you can find more information on them.
