About

This thatch taster day is being held as a partnership between CITB NI and Department for Communities Historic Environment Division.

The day will offer an introduction to thatch and thatching. You will get an introduction to different thatching methods and considerations in specifying thatch, before getting hands on thatching training roofs using flax and combed wheat, and the scallop method. All materials and lunch, tea and coffee will be provided. No experience necessary!

Please note, places are limited to 8 attendees in order to maximise participant learning and safety. If you are no longer able to attend, please notify the organiser as soon as possible to allow your place to be released.

Who should attend?

This taster day is for anyone with an interest in Irish thatch, who wish to gain an understanding of its practical application. The session would be useful to a variety of attendees, from owners of thatched buildings to those thinking of becoming thatchers or those who would specify works to thatched buildings. No construction experience is required, and you will be guided by experienced craftspeople with a wealth of experience of maintaining and repairing Northern Ireland’s state care monuments.
