Restoring our History – Call to Take Part State Care Monuments Survey

The Department for Communities, Historic Environment Division (HED) has launched a public survey to get feedback on and hear the thoughts about the management of historic monuments and sites across Northern Ireland. The main focus of the survey is to get an understanding of the priorities when conserving monuments and to ask for the public’s help to rank what they see as most important, which historic sites and monuments should be prioritised for preservation and maintenance.

The online survey is the first of its kind for HED your views and feedback will be used to inform what happens in the future and to help refine the operating model of State Care Monuments (SCM).

SCMs are historic monuments and sites which are under the ownership or guardianship of the Department for Communities. There are currently 190 State Care Monuments, which includes 16 sites considered as enhanced access sites. HED restores and maintains ancient tombs, medieval mottes, iconic castles and rural heritage buildings from Dunluce Castle, Ballycopeland Windmill to Derry’s City Walls. Each place tells a story of our past and represents a cultural footprint of some civilisations dating back thousands of years.

We would like as many people as possible to take part in the survey so that we can build a comprehensive understanding of what is important to you.

The survey is now open and closes 17 November 2021. It should take no more than 5 minutes to complete.
